My interpretation of the North East England folk tale of the Hartlepool Monkey. It is said that during the Napoleonic wars, the people of Hartlepool found a live monkey dressed in French navy uniform washed up on the beach. The townsfolk thought the monkey was a French spy and hanged it. The people of Hartlepool are nicknamed ‘monkey hangers’ because of this much loved, though dark, tale. I like to think that the monkey really was a spy.. hence his knowing expression in this piece.
